Sunny and 75

Songwriting Study: Sunny and 75

Written by Michael Dulaney,Jason Sellers and Paul Jenkins

Performed by Joe Nichols

Yes! Who doesn’t want to be somewhere and 75?….I love this tune!

Lets break it down….

The structure is Verse/PreChorus/Chorus/Half Verse/Chorus/Bridge/Chorus

The intro is 17 seconds long, and the hook comes in at the top of the chorus at 41 seconds and the tune is about 3:20….Also the chorus is sandwiched with the hook line “Sunny and 75”…Fairly typical for a country song.

Right away the writers start painting pictures, yellow two piece, black ray bans ,bare feet, covered in  sand, jet trails, ponytails. Awesome. These images are drawing me in right away. You can tell these are seasoned country writers. In my early days of writing I would have written something like “She looks really good on the beach”…That my friends, is just not good enough….Not stimulating the listeners imagination. If you are looking to write a commercial country tune, descriptive detail is the norm.

Now the rhymes. They come along pretty quick….Piece/feet Bans/Sand Jet Trails/Ponytails etc. Really hooks the listener along with the descriptive detail. Verse one kills it IMO.

Now the chorus. Awesome imagery again. Beach chair, salt air and yes the hook at the top and bottom of the chorus. All in 40 seconds or so before the modern A.D.D. Listener loses patience. Great melody throughout. Melody hooks them in, lyrics keep them there.

Verse 2….Hmmm a half verse. Slightly unusual at verse 2 for this to happen. Also less imagery here. I guess by the time we get to this point in the song, the imagery in the first verse and chorus is like an Ice Cream cone, dripping over the rest of the song….And the half verse may be the writers catering to the A.D.D. crowd, as this gets us back to the hook pretty quick. We have now heard the hook twice in a 1:30.

This tune went to #1………..TIP!

Pretty typical the rest of the way out.It was snowing here last night….Wish I was somewhere and 75 right about now. The writers did their job here, drawing us in with a relatable subject, imagery and using structure and song craft to drive it home.

“Sunny And 75″

Verse 1

A yellow two piece, black Ray Bans
Your bare feet covered in sand
White jet trails across the blue sky
Your ponytail showing off the sunshine
Like a postcard, out of nowhere
You get to me, you give me that smile and

Chorus

I’m somewhere, somewhere sunny and 75
You and me on a beach chair
Yeah, I’m so there every time I look in your eyes
Kissing you and the salt air
I can taste it, I swear
Take me somewhere sunny and 75

Verse 2

It doesn’t take much for you to move me
Just the way you’re leaning into me
It’s a holiday when we’re together
I wanna stay with you forever

Chorus

Somewhere, somewhere sunny and 75
You and me on a beach chair
Yeah, I’m so there every time I look in your eyes
Kissing you and the salt air
I can taste it, I swear
Take me somewhere sunny and 75

Bridge

You’re like the fast lane West bound
You feel like a windows rolled down
I cant wait until we get there, somewhere

Chorus

Somewhere sunny and 75
You and me on a beach chair
Yeah, I’m so there every time I look in your eyes
Kissing you and the salt air
I can taste it, I swear
Take me somewhere sunny and 75
