Summer Breeze

Summer Breeze

Makes me feel fine….Man, this song changed my life….I have a very vivid memory of laying on my front lawn in 1974 listening to this tune on my cherished transistor radio. It had a red leather cover with little holes punched in it for the speakers and a 3 foot antenna. I think it was a birthday gift from my Ma…Thanks Mom!…As I lay on the grass it seemed like the music floated out of the radio and into my heart. It describes a sort of suburban bliss that I guess I longed for that was not necessarily the reality of my little 12 year old life. As strange as it sounds, I felt like I grew up that day. Some of the harsh realities of life hit me and I really felt it….Funny the things you remember…Music is so powerful.

The study

This one is a Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Bridge/Verse/Chorus

The rhyme scheme for the verse’s is ABAB and the chorus is AA.The bridge is AABB….hmm notice that songwriters?…Different rhyme schemes in the sections.

This song was a big hit…TIP!

Verse 1…excellent vivid external details summed up in the fourth line with the internal detail “Letting me know everything is alright”…TIP! As mentioned in a previous post the details from verse 1 and 2 “drip” over the rest of the tune and accentuate the hook(Summer Breeze), which is part internal (makes me feel fine) and part external (Jasmine blowing).. Verse 3 continues on with these patterns but does not hold the same rhyme pattern as the first 2 verses. This works as the tune is pretty strong at this point and can withstand the glitch. Notice they didn’t do that in the first verse?

The rest of the tune is standard stuff with the bridge coming in when the listener expects it to after hearing the verse’s and chorus twice.

Once again the writers did their job drawing me in with details and using songcraft and structure to hammer this emotionally uplifting tune home.

Love it!

Summer Breeze

Verse 1

See the curtains hangin’ in the window
In the evenin’ on a Friday night
Little light is shinin’ through the window
Lets me know everything’s alright

Chorus

Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind

Verse 2

See the paper layin’ on the sidewalk
A little music from the house next door
So I walked on up to the doorstep
Through the screen and across the floor

Chorus

Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind

Bridge

Sweet days of summer, the jasmine’s in bloom
July is dressed up and playing her tune
And I come home from a hard day’s work
And you’re waiting there, not a care in the world

Verse 3

See the smile awaitin’ in the kitchen
Food cookin’ in the plates for two
Feel the arms that reach out to hold me
In the evening when the day is through

Chorus

Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind

You are so right about that song, Dave. I remember hearing it and it reminds me of a specific place. On a rainy day while we were summer-living in a cabin in Abbotsford picking strawberries and raspberries. It was our first year, and we were the new family on the block, contending with people who played each other against one another. I'm proud to say that my mother changed that by not taking sides and giving a better example. But I remember this song.
